"M" is for Margaery Tyrell

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Here is one of my favourite female characters: Margaery Tyrell. The lovely Natalie Dormer portrays her in HBO's Game of Thrones.

Margaery is the only daughter from House Tyrell. She has three older brothers - Willas, Lord Garlan and Ser Loras. As a female, she is destined to marry into a great house and unite two families, securing wealth, political ties and forging new alliances.

In A Clash of Kings, we see that Margaery Tyrell has married Renly Baratheon and by rights, has become his Queen. We all know that Loras and Renly are having a secret relationship. This does not bother Margaery, as she has married her King, knowing what she was getting into and what was expected of her in this political arrangement.

For a female in Westeros, she is very well educated and pretty shrewd. I like to think that she gets that blunt and shrewd streak from her grandmother, Lady Olenna Redwyne. Margaery possesses looks and wit and understands the necessity of deception, especially to those in the court. What would've been a strategic marriage soon comes undone, as Renly is murdered by his brother and the red priestess from Asshai.

Margaery understands that being in the right position at the right time means that unrivalled power could be in her grasp. We see her pleading her case to King Joffrey, that she has become enamored of him and all his feats. Just watching Natalie Dormer state her intentions to Joffrey with that seductive twinkle in her eye and her regal wardrobe, well Joffrey pretty much likes what he sees and discards Sansa Stark in favour of Lady Margaery Tyrell.

Season III looks pretty exciting and I cannot wait to see how Margaery's character begins to show some real teeth and some edge. Margaery is savvy enough to know that she wants to be aligned with the most powerful man in Westeros, because it means prestige for her family and a secure position for her in court and for any future heirs. I don't think she will buckle under Joffrey the way Sansa did.

Perhaps she will use her sultry wiles on Joffrey to get what she wants. I say whatever she needs to do to get ahead, do it. The men of Westeros never flinch at having to wage weapons, threats and seize opportunities, when presented.

So if a woman chooses to make love instead of war to obtain power, it doesn't make her weaker. Pen is mightier than the sword. No man alive can withstand the alluring, tantalizing siren call from a woman. Especially Natalie Dormer's Margaery Tyrell. Watch her in the Tudors. Then you'll know exactly what I mean.

"L" is for Lannisters

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

My favourite family from Westeros....NOT! The ONLY exception is Tyrion. He walks with a swagger, is extremely intelligent and cunning. I like how he sees through everyone else's lies and deceit.

The rest of his family are abhorrent.

Let's start with his older siblings, shall we? What can we say about a pair of fraternal twins who commit incest? Nothing pleasant, that's for sure! Cersei Lannister was the first twin born to Joanna and Tywin Lannister of Casterly Rock. Jaime was born second. Both blond, cherubic and healthy, they grew up looking almost identical. The twins were educated very differently, much to Cersei's chagrin. She was taught all the finer points that befits a young lady of her station: court etiquette, needlework, dancing, poetry, household management and the history of all the Houses in Westeros.

Jaime Lannister was trained by the Casterly Rock men at arms to use swords, shields, axes, lances and how to properly ride horses into battle and for transportation. After all, he was a man and expected to serve his family through politics or combat.

Growing up, the twins began to have a sick, sordid relationship, with each other.  This relationship was carefully guarded and ultimately produced three children, whom Cersei let her late husband think he was the father. Readers of the books and audience members who've watched the series all thought how absolutely disgusting the two of them were for carrying on in such a depraved manner.

Cersei is angry and resentful for being born a female and being made to marry and serve her family like chattel. Jaime is arrogant and condescending, because he is so skilled as a member of the King's guard.

Tyrion is the one everyone likes best. Why? He has survived heartache and ridicule by many, including his own family members. He has used the fact that he is a dwarf to build up his strengths and cultivate a memorable persona. He reads and writes. He is shrewd, intelligent and is very capable of having intelligent conversations about anything. He has empathy for those less fortunate then himself, a rare quality that his siblings and father do not possess. He is a total ladies man. We all love him for it, too!

Then there is daddy. Tywin Lannister does not take bull from anyone. The man stands well over 6'5 and carries himself regally. This is a man with a stern military background. His has been very successful in all of his campaigns. He is also very wealthy and understands court politics and financial policies very well. He has a keen mind and sharp, cutting wit. Tywin Lannister is not the kind of man you want to trifle with. Ever.

There are other Lannisters that we've been introduced to, namely Kevan Lannister and Lancel Lannister. Kevan is Tywin's younger brother. He serves on his brother's war council and gives prudent and thoughtful advice. He is smart enough to know that Tywin holds all the power and that it is best to serve a man who is in power and maintains control of that power.  Lancel Lannister is cousin to Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion. Lancel seems like a little whiner, a backstabbing man who will do anything to elevate his social position. I think we all enjoyed seeing Tyrion mess with his head during the second season. I know I enjoyed their scenes together. Nothing like Tyrion putting a member of his own family in their place! Rightfully so!!

Now, I would also like to include Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen. Joffrey is an outright psycho. His immature and power hungry behaviour speaks for itself. If only Tommen, the youngest boy, had been born first. Tommen has a very sweet and loving disposition. Totally opposite of what a Lannister is like. Myrcella is a sweet natured teenage girl. It's hard to believe that those two younger siblings have Cersei Lannister as their mother. She is a monster.

I wouldn't expect to see Cersei up for 'Mother of the Year' award anytime soon. As for Joffrey...is there anyone else out there who is waiting and counting that days to see what goes down in Season III next year?! I am!!

"K" is for King's Landing

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , ,

Ah, yes. King's Landing. A city that could easily be compared to medieval European cities, such as London, Paris or Rome. This jewel is the residence for the ruling King and his family and the royal court. King's Landing is the capital of Westeros and also the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. In that respect, I could compare it to Ottawa, which is the capital of Canada.

I'm not sure that I'd want to reside there. You see an awful lot of the rest of the city and how its' inhabitants fare. The poor live in cramped quarters at the bottom of the city, which is known as the "Flea Bottom" district. The peasants live in farms on property that surrounds King's Landing. It is built on a series of three hills and is walled, the way many European citadels were. The Red Keep is home to the infamous "Iron Throne." There is also the Great Sept of Baelor, where the most religious and fervent of Maesters come to worship.

I would not willingly want to visit or move to King's Landing anytime soon. In Season I, Arya Stark couldn't wait to leave and go back home to Winterfell. Call it a sixth sense or common sense, but from what us fans saw of King's Landing, there were too many evil things underfoot, too many people with ulterior motives in that nasty place. Sansa Stark was the total opposite - she thought the place was courtly and perfect, like something right out of a fairytale. And you wonder why I adore Arya - she has the keen ability to see things for what they are, instead of daydreaming of what the place could be like.

King's Landing seems to be the place for power hungry people to congregate to. That and all the liars, suck ups, back stabbers, spies, prostitutes, orphans, vying houses, tradespeople, soldiers and common folk flock to. I can see why George R R Martin compared King's Landing to medieval London or Paris. Those cities had various classes of people and all sorts of activity going on inside it.

The late Robert Baratheon sat on the Iron Throne. Now, his 'son' Joffrey sits on it and the Lannister family is the chief ruling family in King's Landing and in all of Westeros. King's Landing is no place to go for a vacation, or raise a family, let alone have one as power hungry and depraved as the Lannisters, rule from it.

I'm sure George R R Martin has a few surprises in store for us, especially in March 2013, when Season III debuts!

"J" is for Jaqen H'gar

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , ,

The baddest  - yet coolest - assassin on Game of Thrones is none other then Jaqen H'gar. You have to admit, there was something aloof...mysterious...dangerous about him, especially when we first caught a glimpse of him in that small cart, on the way to the Wall.

Anyone who can keep a calm composure and talk in third person without breaking a sweat is worth noting. Especially in Westeros, where there are so many characters and you really don't know who is a good guy or a bad guy until a few episodes have been shown.

Jaqen H'gar makes his debut in Season I, when Arya Stark had been disguised as a boy and was smuggled out of Kings Landing by Yoren, for her own safety. He is sitting in a small cart, apparently a prisoner and on his way to the Wall with the rest of the recruits that Yoren has found. He has red hair, with several streaks of white in it. He has the most hypnotic blue eyes I've ever seen. He doesn't bark or harass Arya, the way the others do. His quiet demeanour suggests that this man has some sort of secret power or ability that has yet to reveal itself. Yoren scoured the dungeons and prisons of Kings Landing, in search of new recruits for the Brotherhood of the Night's Watch. Apparently, other prisoners feared Jaqen H'gar. Perhaps with good reason, as we find out that he is a part of a secret troupe called the "Faceless Men" - they have the abilities to take on the physical appearance of others, and when that person's persona is no longer of use, they shape shift to become an entirely different person altogether! Which explains how he can take down so many people and not get caught.

When Arya meets up with him again in Season II while stationed at Harrenhal, she finds out that he is now serving Tywin Lannister's forces. She has a chance meeting with him and becomes upset, making her feelings known, stating that she should've just left him in the cart after being attacked by the Kings guard at the end of Season I. He doesn't flinch, nor does he deny what he is. He very calmly explains to her that he is now in debt to her. He asks her to name three people, because Arya owes the "Red God" three lives. Pretty sweet exchange, if you ask me, because this girl has a wicked agenda. She has a very long list and any help to getting rid of her enemies is just pure genius!

Jaqen H'gar helps out Arya Stark in ways she didn't even think of were possible. At first, she is skeptical of his abilities. Once the Tickler and Ser Amory Lorch are assassinated, she realizes that Jaqen H'gar is a force to be reckoned with and a very valuable ally. He also happens to arrange her escape from Harrenhal late one night, by simply stating to walk out of the gates at midnight. If you've seen the final episode, you'll know just how he took care of all the guards. At the end of Season II, Jaqen reveals all to Arya and asks that she go with him. Unfortunately, she rejects his offer, but not because she is scared or fears for her life, but because she needs to reunite with her brothers, sister and mother. He gives her a very strange but valuable coin with the phrase - "Valar Morghulis" - meaning "All men must die."

They part, Jaqen turns around to say goodbye to Arya and has completely changed looks! I am hoping and praying we see a little more of the elusive Jaqen H'gar in Season III or Season IV (I know, I'm being a bit pretentious when I say that, but hope springs eternal)!

"I" is for the Iron Throne

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , ,

Between you and I, would you really want to sit on the Iron Throne?

I did. Once. This happened in March. I went downtown Toronto to see the Game of Thrones exhibition at the Bell Lightbox and it was pretty cool. So, in a sense, I can truly say that I sat down on the Iron Throne. It was hard and lumpy. And that was just one of the prop chairs flown in from Dublin.

I know that the Iron Throne is not a seat of power that I'd want to occupy anytime soon. Especially since I've read four of the books already and know that the throne is a curse. Too much hatred to deal with. Too much greed from everyone wanting their share of wealth. Too many sleepless nights, worrying about assassins coming to get you, resentful Houses trying to wage war or revenge, getting deeper and deeper into debt. Give me another position, but not as a Queen on the Iron Throne.

That throne does something funny to those who occupy it. They either go slightly mad, they abuse their power or their reign is ended abruptly. I took many history courses when I attended university and the one main theme that seemed to carry over was that the path the paved the way to sitting on any throne, for that matter, was littered with sins, murder, blackmail and greed. When I watch the HBO series Game of Thrones, I totally understand and agree with the aforementioned statement.

Remember what the late King Robert Baratheon said to the late Ned Stark in Season I? All he wanted to do was, "eat, sleep, drink and whore his way into an early grave." Remember what Petyr Baelish said to Ros in Season II? "Too often those with the most power have the least grace." He was absolutely correct. The current King sitting on the Iron Throne, Joffrey Baratheon, is a psychotic, arrogant and condescending twit who is cruel to everyone around him. He has a malicious streak to him a mile wide. No doubt lovingly nurtured by his own saintly mother, Queen Regent Cersei. I wait in high anticipation for Season III to roll around next year...and to see which character says another profound quote about power or ruling the Seven Kingdoms.

Ruling from the Iron Throne means having only the most loyal people around you, having a keen intellect, a sharp eye for military and financial dealings and having courage. Having a backbone. And having really think skin, because the amount of people that hate you and openly mock you is enough to make anyone go in a corner and lick their wounds. A ruler who sits on the Iron Throne should also possess honour, strength, courage and tenacity. All the qualities that Joffrey does not possess.

Power shared is power halved. Joffrey knows that and clings tightly to his throne. Same with Cersei. Poor Ned Stark. He found out the hard way that trying to be noble instead of cunning cost him his life.

"H" is for the Hound & HBO

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , ,

The Hound. What more can I say?

He's tall, he's tough and he takes no prisoners. This man is raw and edgy. He goes into battle and always emerges the victor. He stands over 6'5. The man has a helmet that would frighten away most children. His face is burnt and scarred on one side.

This is not a man that you go running to for a hug. Don't expect him to feel sorry for you either. In fact, one could argue that the Hound feels nothing. He is a killer. He is a soldier. He guards Prince Joffrey. Don't make assumptions about him, though. In the books and in the HBO series, I always got the impression that he really resented his position in the Lannister household. After all, guarding Prince Joffrey seems like such a waste of his time. And Joffrey is no picnic.

I think beneath that hardened surface lies a man who feels, who thinks and who longs to be more then what he already is. I think that he is a very shrewd man, but that nobody gives him proper credit. He is just defined by his role as a blood thirsty killer who belongs to the Kings guard.

Actor Rory McCann is perfect for the role in every way possible: his dark visage, his height, the dark eyes that see right through a person and his voice - just watch his audition on YouTube and you'll know what I mean. The man can wear heavy armor, charge into battle and still stand straight. I do love his helmet, as it lends a sense of foreboding to his persona.

I think the Hound is tired of being around the Lannisters. He sees them as bullies, albeit powerful ones. He hates his older brother - Gregor Clegane, who is known as "The Mountain Who Rides." To add insult to injury, Gregor is known as "Ser" Gregor Clegane, with a keep and lands. Sandor Clegane is the younger brother, untitled and personal guard of Prince Joffrey Baratheon.

He sees how Joffrey treats Sansa in Season I. Season II gets a lot more gritty and violent and the Hound tells the truth to Sansa: - "We're all killers. Your father was a killer. Your brother is a killer. Your future sons will be killers." Not exactly what a 14 year old teenage girl wants to hear, but the Hound has a funny way of making sense, especially in a time where common sense is lacking big time in Westeros.

I look forward to seeing more the Hound in Season III. I've read four of the books so far...and let's just say that the Hound isn't the monster that I made him out to be a while back.

As for HBO, well, let's just say that this Canadian gal is super duper happy that Game of Thrones became a series, all thanks to a few savvy producers, writers and a certain author. Without the talents and hard work of so many people, this fantastic series would not have become a reality! There is also a satellite website called HBO Watch and this site is dedicated to bringing fans news about all the wonderful developments of HBO shows by providing articles, character profiles and point of view essays and opinions.  (**Shameless self promotion warning: I have written several character profiles for HBO Watch**)

"G" is for George R R Martin!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: ,

Two topics for the letter "G" - George R. R. Martin, who we all know as the big guy who wrote this fantastic series of books! Thank you George, for giving us fans hours of endless reading pleasure. I am just about to start the fifth book, "A Dance with Dragons." :)

Also, "G" can stand for Game of Thrones soundtrack. What kind of music would you recommend for a potential "Game of Thrones" soundtrack? I love Ramin Djawadi's score. His music is absolutely key to creating the mood and delivering heavy on the emotion.

However, are there any songs out there that would be applicable to the series? The songs that come to mind so far are the following:

"Seven Devils" by Florence and the Machine;
"Immigrant Song" and "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin;
"Scarborough Fair" by Simon and Garfunkel;
"Of Wolf and Man" by Metallica;
"A Real Human Being" by College;
"Run for the Hills" by Iron Maiden;
"Short People" by Randy Newman;
"Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon;
"Highway to Hell" and "Have a Drink On Me" by AC/DC.

Are there any other musical selections you can think of? Feel free to comment on my blog! Cheers

"F" is for Frey!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , ,

We come to the letter "F." Normally, I don't mind the letter but I detest who this post represents. "F" stands for Frey. The Frey that most comes to mind is the cantankerous, sly old fox, Walder Frey. What I remember from Season I is how Lady Catelyn went to negotiate terms with him and he was newly married....to a 15 year old teenage girl. Talk about revolting. "And her honey's all mine." Could Walder Frey get any more disgusting?!

Yes, the man is called "Late Lord Frey," because he is known in the Seven Kingdoms for showing up late for battles. Preferable when the battles are over. How convenient. He has a lot of children and even more bastards. He is also very ambiguous in the series and extremely cranky in the books.

I know from what I've seen and what I've read, that I would not want Lord Walder Frey as my enemy. He has lived to be almost 90 years old and there's a reason for it: his cunning. He has outlived many a man because he is sly and able to look at situations and judge them for better or for worse.

Interesting to note that two betrothals were brokered at the end of Season I between two of his children to Robb Stark and Arya Stark.  Now that we've all finished watching Season II, we all know that Arya is so far removed from being engaged to one of Lord Walder Frey's sons, that really, she has nothing to worry about. It's Robb Stark's actions that have been a real breach of contract.

I have read four out of five books and I will not spoil anything for anyone checking out my little blog spot. But I will say this: Lady Catelyn Stark implored her son not to rub Lord Walder Frey the wrong way. He doesn't need the banner men of the North. More like, they need him because of his bridge. He has the advantage where he can call the tune and name his price to all that need to cross the Frey bridges.

Robb Stark: for all your military skill, you sure lack in common sense. And for what? A pretty face! Lord Walder Frey is a dangerous man. You will soon find out just how dangerous and vicious a 90 year old man can be...

"E" is for Eleonora

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , ,

In my defence, I am going to dedicate this blog post to all Game of Thrones fans, whose names begin with the letter "E." Seeing as how this is my blog, I more or less think I can get away with posting this, too.

Oh, alright. I'll include "The Eyrie," which we all know to be the ancestral home of House Arryn. This is a fortress that stands very tall, on top of a mountain range that is almost impossible to climb during any season except summer. It is certainly advantageous from a protection and a military standpoint. The Eyrie has a few floors for their prisoners, known as the 'Sky Cells.' Tyrion Lannister found that out when he was brought there for a trial by Lady Catelyn Stark.

Life appears to be very elegant in the Eyrie. As Lady Lysa Arryn once said, "Life is elegant here in the Vale, we have no executioner." The Vale of Arryn has yet to declare support for any of the ruling families who are fighting for the Iron Throne, thus it is seen to be neutral territory. The Vale of Arryn lands are situated between the lands of the north (belonging to House Stark) and the lands to the middle of Westeros (belonging to House Tully, which just happens to be Lady Lysa's father's lands).

The Eyrie is currently ruled by lady Lysa and her son, Lord Robert Arryn, a sickly and temperamental young boy.

"D" is for Dothraki

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , ,

The Dothraki are the nomadic tribe of fearsome warriors that we see (and read about) in Game of Thrones. They know how to ride a stallion, charge into battle, wield pretty scary looking swords, daggers, sabres and spears and conquer any civilization that is weak (and unfortunately, in their way).

The leader of the Dothraki tribe is Khal Drogo. In the series, he is played by actor Jason Momoa. He is a tall, powerfully built and sexy as hell warrior. I looked forward to seeing him during season I. His demeanour came across as frightening and dominant, as the same time. His hair was the longest - as is Dothraki custom. Until a warrior is defeated in battle, his hair grows very long. His ponytail was the longest.

The Dothraki roam from one coast to another and live across the narrow sea, far beyond Pentos. They live in the vast lands of Essos, north of the Red Waste. Their chief city is Vaes Dothrak. Their language is particularly difficult to master. Their way of life is almost prehistoric: men rule with an iron fist and women are subservient. It's not a life that I would freely choose. When Khal Drogo married Daenerys Targaryen, it was as if two worlds were about to collide. He was tall, built, undefeated in battle and had a well known reputation for being a violent warlord. She was a delicate, ethereal exiled princess who knew little of the ways of men.

The beginning of their marriage was a trial - Dany did not know the language, Dothraki customs and was not at all happy at sharing the marriage bed with Khal Drogo. Once tutored by a Dothraki handmaiden, she came to understand and value the power of female sexuality to enslave her warlord husband. It certainly worked and because she learned the language, adopted the mannerisms and the traditional garb of the Dothraki women, Khal Drogo came to respect his wife and cherish her.

It made me so sad to see that their union would not produce any children and that she would be left a widow, heart broken and lost in the world. All Dany was left with was her three petrified dragon eggs and the memories of her beloved Khal Drogo. You have to hand it to this woman: she still led a small horde across the Red Waste in order to try and save them and start anew. In her heart, no one will ever take the place of her beloved Dothraki prince, Khal Drogo.

"My sun and stars, moon of my life."

"C" is for Casterly Rock!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , ,

I'd like to live at Casterly Rock. I'd have servants to attend my every whim; I'd have a huge room; lots of gold and oh, of course, I'd be residing in the ancient house of the Lannister clan.

What's there NOT to like?! Casterly Rock is the chief residence of the current ruling family - the Lannisters. Tywin Lannister is a rich and very powerful man. When Tyrion says to anyone within earshot that, "A Lannister always pays his debts," he's not joking!

Casterly Rock sits high on top of a great mountain range and deep within the earth, there are veins of molten gold deposits scattered throughout. No wonder why the Lannisters can pay for everything and never have any debts. When you sit on top of THE richest gold deposit in the Seven Kingdoms, then you'd be able to brag about it all day long, too! Life is pretty good in Westeros....especially if your surname is Lannister.

I believe that Casterly Rocks sits atop of a mountain range that overlooks Lannisport harbour. Casterly Rock has been the chief residence for all the Lannister dynasty. They have Lann the Cleaver to thank for that!

"B" is for Baratheon

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , ,

There once were three brothers: King Robert, Renly and Stannis. This story could've had a happier ending.
Alas, the truth is that Robert never loved any of his brothers. He was the eldest, known as the "Usurper King." Robert hated all things Targaryen. He loved womanizing and drinking wine. And for a very long time, he was spoiling for a war. He was married to Cersei Lannister. It wasn't a happy union. Although capable of fathering many illegitimate children, his three offspring with Cersei were not his. Bitter, tired and heavily in debt, Robert became disenchanted with the Seven Kingdoms. That, and he was always haunted by the ghost of Lyanna Stark.
Renly was the youngest Baratheon brother. Easy on the eyes, he was graceful and served on his late brother's small council. He disliked Cersei and didn't trust her - with good reason. Married to Margaery Tyrell, he had a very short reign as one of the five Kings vying for the Iron Throne. Too bad for Renly - there was a time where he was to make a worthy alliance with King Robb in the North. Sadly, he was murdered by dark forces.
Stannis Baratheon is the middle brother. A cold and austere man, he is used to giving military commands with force and skill. He doesn't have the warmest personality but has the strength of a massive army behind him. Then there is Melisandre, the Red Priestess from Asshai who is always by his side. Makes you wonder if Renly is the puppet master or the puppet. Blackwater Bay serves as a reminder that he had an army but was no where near to matching Tywin Lannister's forces.
It's too bad the Baratheon brothers weren't loyal to each other. Who knows how Westeros would've turned out. Maybe it would've been a pleasant place to live in.

"A" is for Arya!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , ,

Well of course! What did anyone expect?!

If I ever have a little girl, I already told my husband that we are naming her Arya and that's the end of the discussion. He has perfected a way of acknowledging me, when he is either amused with my shenanigans, or hasn't really paid attention to them, by stating, "Yes, dear."

I hope I have a little Arya to call my own in the near future (here's hoping that job comes my way). Now, back to the topic at hand. Where to begin? We catch a glimpse of a young girl, bored to tears and doing some needlepoint in a room with other ladies at the castle of Winterfell. We also see just how bored Arya is with having to do such a pointless task (yes, I said pointless, I fully agree with Arya on that one).

We also see that Arya has a keen intellect and longs for something more. Arya can shoot a bow as well as any of her brothers. In fact, she actually makes Bran look bad in front of the older Starks. We also know that Arya resembles her late aunt, Lyanna Stark. They share the same looks and personality.

Arya had some pretty neat experiences during the first season- she travelled to King's Landing with her sister and father, she met Syrio Forel and took up fencing and swordplay and she began her training. Unfortunately, she has some terrible experiences, too: she fought against that turd Joffrey and Lady ended up paying the price for it, she came to see how evil the Lannisters were and was present while her father was executed.

In the second season, we see Arya toughen up - by circumstance. Yoren smuggles her out of King's Landing with Gendry (the late King Robert Baratheon's illegitimate son) and takes them to the safety of the Wall. Only they don't get too far. They end up at Harrenhal. She ends up being a cup bearer for Tywin Lannister, of all men. Not that it's a bad thing, mind you, especially when the men discuss warfare and strategy. We see Arya hold her own against the great lion. The little wolf pup is growing up and growing teeth, while she's at it.

She is tough, spunky and clever enough to pose as a boy and then as a commoner. Tywin grows rather fond of her and they have meaningful conversations. She shows a maturity that most 11 year old girls don't possess. She also meets the mysterious stranger, Jaqen H'gar. They have an unusual agreement. I can't wait to see more of Arya Stark in "A Storm of Swords" (season three).

April 2013 is going to ROCK!

A to Z! A to Z!

Author: Anonymous /

Okay, as promised, for the months of July and August, I am going to post anything and everything Game of Thrones - but in alphabetical order.

I've come up with a list of possible topics. So far, the only letters that are giving me a little bit of grief are U, X and Z.

Not surprised there, however, I have more then enough on my list so far. I'm sure between the beginning of July to the end of August, I'll think of a few things to fill up those pesky letters!

Winds of Westeros from 'A to Z'

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , ,

Something caught my eye, while wandering around, reading other blogs. A read about an A to Z challenge that some blogger had done this year. They challenged themselves to blog on their own blog spot, but it had to be done in alphabetical order and done for 26 days straight, with the exception of Sundays.

Now, I'm not even going to pretend to do that. I will produce a gentle version of doing the A to Z blogging. I'll post all things wonderful about Game of Thrones from A to Z, but I won't do it for 26 days in a row. I don't want to bore anyone reading my blog and I don't want to be brain dead, either.

I prefer to take my time and spread out the ideas over a few months. I look at it like this: I will have July and August to post alphabetical blog entries. I will be working in the month of July, teaching Italian to Kindergarten students and I am still participating in a French as a Second Language professional development course as a teacher. So, I have those two factors to consider. But I am happy that I came across that geeky science fiction blog that inspired me to do this.

Here's hoping I can think of something to post for every single letter in the alphabet (I think X, Y and Z are going to be a bit tricky)!

Charles Dance & Maisie Williams

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , ,

Well, as with all awards shows, the Emmys have put forth suggestions for their nomination ballots.

I BETTER see Charles Dance and Maisie Williams being nominated for Best Actor or Actress or Supporting Actor and Actress.

Yes, for those that have read the books, you know that in a Clash of Kings, they don't actually have personal contact while at Harrenhal, but I have to give credit where credit is due: pairing the debonair Charles Dance with spunky newcomer Maisie Williams was the perfect pairing. It was magic.

It was better then Nutella and bananas. Yes, I said Nutella! I know Charles Dance has been around in many movies, mini-series and plays/theatre productions. He is handsome, sophisticated and magnetic. I will admit, as a woman in her 30s, he is quite the sharp dressed man! I can't picture another English actor in the role of Tywin Lannister. That is a compliment to Charles Dance, because he just oozes leadership and control as Tywin. Right down to that steely glare.

As for Maisie Williams, when she portrays Arya Stark, she is tough, can hold her own against Dance's Tywin Lannister and still manage to maintain her sassy attitude. She portrays a tomboy in the first season, who was forced to grow up, especially after her father was executed. In the second season, we see her using her wit and fencing skills to help get her ahead, while pretending to be a boy. Her lessons with Syrio paid off.

I really want to see these two being rewarded this year for their compelling performances.

HBO WATCH!!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , ,

A week and a half ago, I was reading the HBO Watch Game of Thrones website when a small icon in the top right hand corner caught my eye. Yes, an invitation for fans to write character profiles for HBO Watch! And not just Game of Thrones character profiles, you can pick from a number of interesting HBO shows.

For me, my first love is Game of Thrones. To my utter surprise and delight, one of the editors responded back to my e-mail inquiry. True to my fire sign (Aries) of having a fire lit underneath me, I promptly fired off four pieces of writing to him.

Today, I received an e-mail, telling me that the first piece of writing was published on the HBO Watch Game of Thrones cast site.

Yes, I am extremely flattered and very happy! I wasted no time in posting onto my Facebook wall, my Twitter page and of course, I had to inform my husband. He takes it all in stride and is glad that I found a way to channel my creative side.

I hope you enjoy the character profiles that I have contributed to HBO Watch. I have plenty more that I want to write about! Bring it on!

Trivial Pursuit A No Go

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , ,

Meh. I e-mailed the good folks at Hasbro, regarding an idea for a Game of Thrones Trivial Pursuit edition of their board game.

While they appreciated my zeal and enthusiasm with the idea, right now there are no plans to produce a Game of Thrones edition. Well, that's okay. I'm not totally crushed with their decision but admit it, you like the idea of a Westeros Ice and Fire limited edition Trivial Pursuit board game! I didn't come up with the suggestion so I could profit off of it. No, that wouldn't be fair to George R R Martin. I just liked the idea of what it would be like!

If they ever plan on releasing one, you know yours truly will be purchasing two board games! :)

Cersei Lannister: Schemer

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , ,

Cersei Lannister. Queen. Shrewd. Calculating. Angry. Power hungry. These are just some of the terms that come to mind when describing the Queen Regent.

Lena Headey has captured the icy demeanor of Cersei right down to the last detail. I cannot picture another actress even trying to do the part. From the very first time you see Cersei grace the screen, you get the idea that something’s amiss. Cersei’s eyes pierce right through everyone. She comes off as being aloof, almost crisp towards those she does not know, or more to the point, trust. We find out that she was born into the wealthiest family in Westeros – the Lannister dynasty. She has a twin brother, Jaime, who is part of the Kingsguard. Her younger brother is Tyrion “the Imp” Lannister, who in her eyes is worthless and an embarrassment to the family. He did, after all, cause their beloved mother, Joanna, to die in childbirth. After that horrific event, Cersei never forgave her younger brother and had little use for him growing up.
Being born into the wealthiest family in Westeros has its’ privileges. Cersei would never lack for food, shelter, and clothing. She was given the finest education for a young girl at the time. This is where we see Cersei begin to chafe at her role in life. She was born a female, and with that comes specific obligations: she must be tutored in finer arts of reading, writing, painting, dancing, court etiquette and household management. Not exactly exciting stuff, especially for a young girl of her intellect. She had no use for dolls and pretty things and found them to be a complete waste of time. She wanted to be free, to do the same things that Jaime did, to learn the art of warfare, to train with weapons, to ride horses. Unfortunately, being born female meant she had no choice but to acquiesce to her powerful father’s demands and her family’s expectations.

Being born a female, and a wealthy one at that, meant to be ‘sold off’ in marriage to some nobleman from a wealthy house. A daughter’s duty: to marry well and beget the production of heirs. Not exactly what Cersei wanted in life. I think she is a misunderstood, bitter woman. She never got the chance to marry for love or happiness. Unfortunately, she was carrying on an incestuous relationship with her twin brother, so it’s not like she could openly defy custom and tradition. Had she done so, she would’ve probably risked having terrible consequences for her and her family. After all, through a political and strategic marriage can a daughter bring more status and wealth to her family.  Cersei resents being used as a pawn, powerless to the events being dictated in her life. I think she had a great deal of pent up anger and frustration towards Robert and in a sick, twisted way enjoyed the fact that she did not have children by her lawful husband, but by her own brother. It gives you a glimpse into the madness that will eventually catch up with Cersei further down the road.
She feels that women, in general, have no real power. But she is not just any woman. She is Cersei Lannister. As Queen Cersei, the power she had was still limited, after all, her husband, the late King Robert Baratheon, was still her Lord and ruler. Once he died, her power as Queen Regent became absolute. This is where we see the true nature of the beast. This is a ruthless woman who will not hesitate to have her enemies burnt, tortured or killed if they get in the way of her goals. Eddard Stark found that out the hard way.  In the first season, we see glimpses into how she will do anything to protect her children, because after all, they were not Robert’s, they were Jaime’s. She did a good job of protecting their parentage until someone started to have doubts and ask questions. Hence, John Arryn’s death.

Cersei is a feminist, but I wouldn’t say that with the best of intentions. Yes, she hates the inequality of her position and title in life. She resents having to be excluded out of most major decisions. She hates being seen as just a woman, a pretty thing, to be cast aside in favour of men with brawn and brains. Once Robert dies, Cersei attains a great deal of power. And power, as Lord Varys once said, ‘is a curious thing.’ You can really get a true sense of a person’s character – give them a little bit of power and see what they choose to do with it. In Cersei’s case, she only does terrible things with it.  As Queen Regent, she made a terrible decision – putting Joffrey on the Iron Throne as King – thinking she could control him like a little puppet on a string. Bad choice, Queen Mum. However, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and they are both very vindictive people. With Lord Tywin Lannister off fighting the Stark forces in the north and Jaime being a part of the Kingsguard, Cersei feels that she is left to her own devices. Cersei cannot tame the monster that is Joffrey, so rather than control him, she allows him free reign and goes along for the ride. What a horrendous ride it is turning out to be.
Having the backing of her family, their wealth and her title of Queen Regent means absolute power.

And absolute power means one thing to Cersei: absolute control.

Westeros Map in Coloured Detail

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , ,

I just found this freaking AMAZING map of Westeros with all the character's travels included on it. It is in colour, in detail and absolutely incredible!

Thank you to the fan that put this together. I love the fact that this fan read the books and said that he wanted to have a visual of locations where characters had been and didn't want to forget the places on the map. A fan by the name of Ser Mountain Goat created the colour map but another fan, Private Major, stepped up his game by adding in where the characters had been, via colour coding.

Thank you both! This is amazing, especially for people who require a visual map or graphic organizer! You guys rock!!

What to do Now That A Clash of Kings is Over

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , ,

Hi there. I'm trying to figure out how I can enhance my "Winds of Westeros" blog. So far, I have added a Feedjit Live Feed to it. I like to see where people visit from. Always nice to know that people from all over check out my humble little blog. As well, I will take more pictures (when the occasion calls for it) and will post more images (of course I do not own them and will make the disclaimer known) as they appear.

Now that we all have to wait another 10 months until the premiere of "Game of Thrones: A Storm of Swords," I was thinking of all the things I'd like to post about. Here is what I came up with so far:

*drum roll please*

Various posts about each respective House in Westeros, according to what I have read and how I feel;
Character posts;
Book signings and events;
My Game of Thrones PS-3 game, the various campaigns I go on and my progress;
A Song of Ice and Fire Book reviews;
Changes from books to screenplays;
The idea of who Jon Snow's parents could be and my theory behind it;
Comic Con dates;
My actors and actresses wish list for Season III;
My Pinterest board and its' progress;
Cakes that I order with a Game of Thrones theme (so far, my birthday cake this year was a purple cake with certain House sigils on it);
My views on the men in Westeros;
My views on women in Westeros;
If Trivial Pursuit responds back to my inquiry about a Game of Thrones limited edition board game
and
if George R R Martin ever responds back to some of my friendly e-mails.

Yes, I sent him some pictures and I also sent him the idea of the Trivial Pursuit game.

I feel that these ideas for my blog will keep me occupied for a while.

Happy reading to all!

John Picacio

I came across an artist named John Picacio. His work in a word: OUTSTANDING. I consider myself to have some talent, where drawing and painting are concerned.

Well, not anymore! He has some beautiful portraits of the characters in "A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones." Well done, sir! *loud applause*

I am so going to follow this guy on Twitter! I love anything and everything associated to George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series! Please, if you follow my blog, take the time and click on the link called "John Picacio Website." This man is VERY talented!

Excessive?!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , ,

Seeing as how I have a lot of free time on my hands (I'm an unemployed teacher who has been avidly looking for work the past year and a half while applying everywhere and volunteering where I could), I find that logging onto Pinterest is quite fun.

Except the fact that the rest of my boards are sadly neglected. They all have an average of 100 to 150 pins. Except "A Song of Ice & Fire: A Game of Thrones."

1573 pins isn't excessive. Right?!

"Valar Morghulis" ~ All Men Must Die

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

From the moment the lights dimmed in my basement, the tension and suspense hung in the air.

I'm talking about THE season finale event of the year on HBO. "Valar Morghulis" - the Valeryian phrase that Jaqen H'gar says to Arya Stark has a deeper meaning, but that will make itself known in A Storm of Swords, which will debut April 6, 2013.

Where to begin: Tyrion. He was grievously injured at the hands of the late Ser Manden Moore, the Kingsguard captain to Joffrey. Only it was that witch, Cersei, who instructed Ser Manden to strike Tyrion down if the opportunity presented itself. Tyrion put a wall up around himself in this episode, not wanting pity and not wanting to leave King's Landing because he knows how to outwit, outfox and survive the rest of the people that play the Game of Thrones. Bronn was released from his post of Captain of the Kingsguard by Tywin or Cersei. His warriors from the Mountains of Vale went back home, paid off by his father. His sister wants his dead. He recieved no credit for the attack on Blackwater Bay. Varys informed him of the many changes that took place while he was unconscious. None of the changes were particualrly good or to his benefit, either. The only consistent person so far has been Podrick Payne, his loyal squire. Even Grand Maester Pycell was acting like a total jerk, making fun of Tyrion's size and commenting on how he does not need a spacious living quarter. I can't stand that Maester. He is an awful man and I hope karma comes back to him! Shae wasn't particularly happy with his decision to stay, but that just builds up more tension for Season III.

Meanwhile, back the throne room, Tywin Lannister was proclaimed 'Saviour of the City' and official Hand of the King, now that Tyrion is out of commission. In another bold move, Littlefinger became Lord of Harrenhal, for his shady dealings of bringing House Tyrell into the Lannister fold. Ser Loras, in a stunning move, asked King Joffrey to make sure his sister, Margaery, was wed to a noblemen of House Lannister...and who more fitting and high then the good King himself? But wait, Joffrey the Sweet remembers he is affianced to Sansa Stark. Once the small council reveals that he is free to break off with Sansa, due to the fact her father was a traitor and her brother is in open rebellion against the Lannister faction, a new alliance is forged. There is more to Margaery then meets the eye. Cersei may regret having Margaery Tyrell as a daughter in law. Sansa, thinking her troubles are now over, turns from the throne room, smiling and crying over her good fortune. Littlefinger quickly comes to tell her the reality of her new found freedom: Joffrey will not let her go back to Winterfell, in fact, she is now at the mercy of the King, both physically and sexually. She is repulsed and frightened. Littlefinger promises to try and help her. He also sees right through her act and informs her that everyone in the Lannister court is a much better liar.

Varys the Spider pays a visit to Littlefinger's brothel in order to procure information from Roz. He knows that Roz is scared of Littlefinger, as she should be but Varys is more interested in protecting her and making her somewhat of a spy. Together, they could find out Littlefinger's weaknesses and make him pay dearly. And I totally like the sound of that!

Brienne of Tarth is escorting Jamie Lannister back to King's Landing. Brienne has to put up with Jaime's stupid and rude endless rantings and ravings. One their way they see three dead bodies hanging from a tree. She wants to the do the honourable thing of burying them when three men approach, wanting to know their business. Quick witted Brienne and Jaime come up with a plausible tale that he is being brought back to Riverrun on a theft charge when one of the men recognizes the Kingslayer.  What happens next is that two of the men are quickly dispatched at the hands of Brienne, who is extremely skilled with the sword, knife and dagger. The last man does not fare so well. After all, he was the loud mouth who boasted that, "Two of them we gave quick deaths." Meaning the last woman hanging was probably raped before she was killed. Well, what goes around comes around and Brienne kills the man slowly, with precision. Jaime looks on, stunned at her stealth and skill. Perhaps the Kingslayer will watch what he says from now on.

Ayra, Hot Pie and Gendry are long gone from Harrenhal when they spot the mysterious Jaqen H'gar standing on top of a small hill. He tells her that she should consider coming to Braavos with him. As much as she really wants to, and learn his mysterious and powerful skills, she really wants to find her brothers, mother and sister. This young girl has been through the ringer, being separated from her family, seeing her father being executed and suffering from the constant threat of violence or starvation at the hands of cruel Lannister guards. Instead, he gives her a very unique coin and should the day come that she needs to seek him out, she is to give that coin to any man from Braavos and repeat the key phrase, "Valar Morghulis." Only then will she be able to connect with him again. In a seamless display of his magical talents, she repeats the phrase one more time and as he turns to leave, he looks back at her one more time. Only it isn't Jaqen's face she sees. It is another man, but his voice. Jaqen is dead. Valar Morghulis.

Robb is suffering from a burning love for the Lady Talisa Migear. This does not sit well with his mother, Lady Catelyn Stark. After all, there is that little thing called a 'betrothal contract' that was made in Season I. They needed House Frey's support and the wily old man made sure to arrange betrothals of a son and daughter of his house to Robb and Arya of House Stark. This is one time where Robb REALLY should've listened to his mother, no matter how upset he was over her releasing Jaime Lannister. Typical man, he was thinking with his loins, instead of his brain. This is another example of yet another Stark starting another war because of a very stupid error. First it was Catelyn, by accusing Tyrion of trying to kill her son Bran, based on circumstantial evidence. Now, it is Robb, who wants to marry for love. He has brought impending doom for his House by marrying Lady Talisa.

Dany, Ser Jorah and her Dothraki comrade go to the House of the Undying, in order to rescue her dragons. She finds a way in but the two men do not. She goes up a winding staircase and hears her dragons. She enters one room, only to see a few doors. She picks the one to the right. She enters what looks like King's Landing, but it's been partially destroyed and it is snowing inside. She walks towards the Iron Throne and almost touches it. In the background, she hears her dragons. She moves towards another exit and finds herself in the midst of a snowstorm up in the north, at the Wall. The snow is almost blinding. She sees what looks like a small dwelling and slowly approaches. As she gets closer, it resembles a Dothraki tent. In a startling discovery, she finds her beloved Khal Drogo sitting there, waiting for her with their son, Rhaego. She thinks she is already dead and that this image is not possible. He tells her she is his everything. They both look down in wonder at their child. Alas, sadly it is not meant to be. She tells him, "Until the sun rises and sets in the east, you will always be my moon and stars." The dragons beckon. She finally returns to find the warlocks of Pree with her dragons, chained to the middle of the room. Dany is not going without a fight. They picked the wrong woman. "Drakaris." With that one word, her dragons are able to breathe fire towards the warlocks and through her, the flames increase with such heat and intensity, that the warlocks are destroyed. Treachery is found - her handmaiden and Xaro are proven to be frauds and locked in that big old empty vault, forever.  Dany and crew take what gold and jewels they can and decide it is time to purchase horses and ships.

Jon Snow and Qhoren Halfhand are making their way to Mance Rayder, along with a group of wildlings and the Lord of Bones. Qhoren antagonizes Jon and forces him to fight. The Lord of Bones decides to let the two rangers fight each other. Qhoren wants Jon to infiltrate Mance's army. In the end, Jon kills Qhoren and you can see he is clearly conflicted with what he had to do in order to survive. Before Qhoren died, he leaned into Jon and spoke of the Brothers of the Night's Watch: "We are brothers, until the end." He sacrificed himself so Jon could go on. Ygritte tells the rest of the wildings, "You can tell Mance that this was the man to take down Qhoren Halfhand." They all look at Jon with awe, perhaps respect, now that he has shown fierce fighting skills and bravery. Jon looks at Ygritte, sorrow and shock in his eyes. She takes him towards a cliff and says that it is time for him to meet Mance Rayder. Below them is a huge valley and in that valley look to be like thousands of cottages or houses. Mance Rayder is building an army, but for what purpose? When will they strike? Whom will they fight?

Theon Greyjoy: I just cannot stand this character. He is a liar and a traitor.  Trapped in Winterfell, surrounded by 500 of Ramsay Bolton's men, he has no choice but to surrender. He refuses to do so, as he is iron born. Maester Luwin informs him that should he run, he could always go to the Wall, where a man's past transgressions no longer count. He advises Theon that there are secret passages below Winterfell and he could slip out at night and make it north to freedom. What happens next is another round of betrayal. He gives a rousing speech to his Iron Island comrades, only to be knocked on conscious and be taken out of Winterfell. Unfortunately, his first lieutenant stabs Maester Luwin with a sharp spear, knocking the old man to his knees. They all leave and Maester Luwin falls over, bleeding heavily. Osha, Hodor and the two boys with their dire wolves come out sometime later to discover that Winterfell has been sacked and is burning. Worse, the wolves find Maester Luwin in the Godswood, in a semi-sitting position, but extremely weak, due to blood loss. The boys burst into tears, as they do not want to leave him. Bran wants to get him his medicine. What Maester Luwin says next made me burst into tears - "They didn't burn you. I pulled both of you out into this world and I have spent nearly every single day with you. And for that I am glad." Rickon is openly sobbing. Maester Luwin pleads with Osha - he tells her that the boys must be taken north because there are too many enemies in the south. He advises them all to go back and get as much food as possible, to put on extra clothing and make it quick because at any moment, someone could show up and kill them all. As Hodor takes the boys and wolves to get the supplies, Maester Luwin refuses Osha's suggestion of milk of the poppy. Instead he looks at her dagger with meaning. She delivers him a quick death and puts him out of pain for good.  They are last seen fleeing from Winterfell and headed north.

Grenn, Samwell and Dolores are out on patrol, collecting dung, as it burns for many hours when making a fire. Sam, in his usual fashion, talks about Gilly. He talks about how she is optimistic, even though she suffered abuse at the hands of her father and thinks that life is still worth living. Grenn and Dolores respond one way or another when they hear the horn blowing. Sam, hearing one blow, is happy....because he thinks Jon and Qhoren have returned. A second horn sounds. Grenn and Dolores pull out their swords. And then the worst sound ever: a third blow of the horn. WHITE WALKERS. Grenn and Dolores run off in one direction. Samwell, his face frozen with shock, sees a snow storm approaching. Only it isn't just snow. He starts to see figures. He can't quite make out what they are yet. Only that he is scared and makes a feeble attempt to run in the same direction as his two companions but at this point, visibility becomes very poor. He hides behind a rock and shakes uncontrollably.  Figures start to come out of the snowy mist. You start to see the blue eyes penetrate the snow. The White Walkers. For thousands of years, everyone south of the Wall scoffed at the notion that they even existed. The Brothers of the Night's Watch knew differently.  As Samwell realizes that this could be the end for him, he hears a noise and looks to his right. He sees a zombie like horse with red eyes and a dead White Walker on top. Only he is not alone. Hundreds of them are wandering, with a dead, glazed look to them. Their eyes are glowing a piercing blue colour. When the camera pans to a wide screen zoom, all of a sudden you see more then hundreds, quite possibly thousands of them are walking along, towards the Wall. Another look at them and you'll notice that they were all dressed differently. Some had the Wildlings garb on. Others looked as if they were from the forests. Some of the White Walkers were former Brothers of the Night's Watch. Samwell is petrified, trapped and surrounded by them. He closes his eyes and begins to cry in earnest, as they all walk past him. He is all alone, no weapons, no army and no obsidian.

Obsidian. Why would he need obsidian? Stick around until April 6, 2013. Then maybe I'll tell you.

Maybe.

Dear George R R Martin, HBO and the good folks at Trivial Pursuit:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE create a Game of Thrones edition of your board game! I swear that if you do, I will go out and buy two of them!

And if you play Trivial Pursuit the way I do, you will want ME on YOUR team.

Trust me on that one!

At present, I now have 1,086 pins on my Pinterest A Song of Ice and Fire: Game of Thrones board.

Yes, I love the books and the HBO show.  I also have quite the following, which I find is quite flattering and humbling. Lots of followers, lots of re-pins. NIIIIICE.

Playstation Game!!

I had a VERY pleasant surprise last night.

I found a little package with a bow on it, on the kitchen counter. Inside: the Playstation 3 game: Game of Thrones!! The official game guide was also in the package.

I got home late last night and was unable to start playing and reading. However, the weekend is almost here. I will start my journey on Saturday afternoon! Can't wait.

Love you, my Jon Snow. (that is my husband's nickname)

Yes, I Have a GoT Board on Pinterest

Like any devoted fan of Game of Thrones, you will find the novels in my house, stacked neatly on my bookshelf. Actually, truth be told, I have two sets of them. I have the large novels that were signed by George R R Martin himself and then I have another set, so if any friends or family members want to borrow them, they can.  I also have a lot of pictures from the book signing. I have the first graphic novel, too.

I'm going to purchase the drinking steins from Chapters. I have two copies of Rolling Stone Magazine - the one with Peter Dinklage on the cover - also included in the bookshelf.  I have the first season on Blu-Ray DVD and it'll only be a matter of time before I purchased the brand new PS3 Game of Thrones game.

Either I am a devoted fan or I have way too much time on my hands. I told my husband that whenever my birthday or Christmas rolls around, any gift that is Game of Thrones related is a good one to get. You won't go wrong in that department.

Alas, I digress (apologies for doing so). So, I'm on Facebook, Twitter and have this blog. I decided, about a month ago, to join Pinterest. I have about 9 boards. The one that I'm most proud of (of course!) is "A Song of Ice and Fire: Game of Thrones."  I have 304 pins to my credit. Before the day is through, there'll be at LEAST 25 more!

What can I say? I am in love with all things wonderful, wacky and whimsical....when it comes to A Song of Ice and Fire!

Fiction or Truth?!

You CANNOT POSSIBLY TEASE ME WITH THIS KIND OF LEAK!!!!! Not fair!

I heard an interesting rumour. HBO, as we already know, has green lit Season III (also known as "A Storm of Swords"). But.....I heard that because A Storm of Swords is so majorly action packed and contains so many story lines and arcs, that Season III will be split into two Seasons! As in Season III Part A and Season III Part B!

OMG! This is better then Nutella! And for those of you that know me, you know I LOVE my Nutella! Saying that Season III's "A Storm of Swords"  is better then Nutella, on my part, is absolutely out of this world! If this is the case, not only is it a major bonus for fans, it's also fantastic for HBO and their screenwriters. Not to mention, the wonderful George R R Martin gets extra time to keep plugging away on "The Winds of Winter."

If I could ask for one thing, it would be that this rumour turns out to be true!

Blackwater!!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Ok.

Seriously.

What is there left to say?!

I was riveted in my seat from the moment the episode "Blackwater Bay" started, right up until the end. I yelled at the television a few times (I have a realllllly big flat screen television). A few times I cheered Tyrion on. At times I insulted Joffrey (what else is new). I had my "Clash of Kings" book beside me. I had my Twitter feed going and could see all the hashtag trending going on, with respect to the Game of Thrones Twitter feed.

Joffrey, you are a moron. The Hound, you have a soft side for Sansa but are loathe to admit it. Besides, you've had it with the Lannisters. Can't say that I blame you, either (with the exception of Tyrion). Tyrion, you had to take over and become the figurehead of support, to instill some bravado in the army, seeing as how Joffrey tuck tailed and ran off like the coward he was.  Stannis, you fool. While I understand that you have a good claim to the Iron Throne, was it necessary to sacrifice so many men, all for the sake of domination? Ser Davos, you're a practical and brave man, but unfortunately, all your years of experience couldn't save your son. Shae, I have to give you credit where it's due. You have a steely exterior, most likely in part of trying to survive your tender years and growing up in Westeros. I kind of have a grudging admiration for you now....but don't forget, I've read almost four books in the series.

Tywin, you clever, sly fox. You have the Tyrells in your midst and have them fighting for you. Hmm. I think you liked Littlefinger's rationale from a few episodes back. I hope Loras has good sense to see in time, he'll end up paying down the road for joining ranks with the Lannisters. Varys, you set a sombre tone. More like ominous. Bronn, you're a pretty tough guy. You and the Hound have unfinished business.

Sansa, you still want to believe that people have good intentions. The Hound offered you your freedom. As well as some pretty blunt advice.  Even though you went to pray for everyone and told Tyrion you'd pray for his safe return, c'mon, did you really think the Imp totally believed you? Mind you, the look on Tyrion's face was one of amusement and belief. I think he understands that Sansa has to do and say what she must, to stay alive. And of course, I can't forget to mention that immoral drunk (no, not Robert, because he's dead) Cersei. What a pathetic woman. She has stooped to new lows, even when I thought she couldn't get any lower. Such touching concern she showed for all in Maegor's Keep. My favourite is how she just kept on drinking and telling Sansa what would and could potentially happen, should King's Landing fall. Disgusting. She is the last person that I would keep the faith with!

Tyrion. What can I say? I'm glad that Podrik slew Ser Manden. Of course, what can you expect from Joffrey's personal Kingsguard? Backstabbers!

Hard to believe there is only one more episode left. Then, us fans will have to wait until April 2013 for Season III...

Blackwater Bay!!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I've been thinking, while I was driving around today, running some errands. When I think of Game of Thrones, my mind is filled with all sorts of possibilities. But that's a whole other blogspot.  In honour of tomorrow night's EPIC episode, "The Battle of Blackwater Bay," two songs come to mind.

The first was Thin Lizzy's, "Jail Break," because there are several lyrics that are very appropriate for tomorrow night's battle sequences. The second song - and probably more ominous - is AC/DC's "Hell's Bells." Why that one, you ask? Well, um, hello?! Seven Gods in Westeros - the Old and the New....and because there is going to be a lot of action that goes down tomorrow night.

Some of the characters are going to survive. Others won't be so lucky. Certainly...some characters deserve to go to the deepest, darkest hell in Westeros, for all the misery and destruction they've caused in the last two seasons.

(I am aware that by rooting for the Lannisters, I am leaving myself open to criticism) I want to make it perfectly clear that I am NOT rooting for Prince Joffrey. Tyrion, show your animal side. After all, your sigil is a lion!

T-minus 34 hours and counting!

I sent HBO Watch an e-mail, expressing an interest in wanting to be a guest blogger for Game of Thrones.
Yes, I guess you could say that I'm a tad bit obssessed with George R R Martin's fantasy epic "A Song of Ice and Fire." I love reading and blogging, so c'mon, HBO Watch! I'm patiently waiting for you to respond back. You guys advertised that you wanted fans to write for you! I'm a fan, here I am!

Peter Dinklage On His Own Terms

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , ,

I just finished reading the full length article in Rolling Stone magazine that features Peter Dinklage, also known as Tyrion Lannister, and it was amazing. His sense of humour - more to the point - his deadpan lines are hilarious. I am happy that Peter Dinklage won both the Emmy and the Golden Globe for his portrayal of the Imp.

I bought two copies - one that everyone can read and one that I have tucked away, underneath my bed for safe keeping.  As an added bonus, RS magazine also has an interview with George R R Martin, based on how he came to create the character of Tyrion Lannister and why he was happy that Peter Dinklage accepted the role.

That Emmy and Golden Globe were bestowed on the right actor! Long live Peter!

The Prince of Winterfell

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , ,

Lots of action in this episode. Oh boy, where to start. Tywin is bent on defeating Robb. Cersei has returned to her normal, hateful self and fighting once again with Tyrion. She thinks she is so above playing the Game of Thrones, that she has captured and currently torturing Shae. Tyrion is quick not to betray his feelings but realizes Cersei has captured the wrong woman. He promises to help Roz. I hope he does, as she looked to be in terrible condition. Tyrion and Bronn are trying to come up with a defence strategy to combat Stannis.  Stannis is sailing towards Kings Landing with an enormous fleet.

Joffrey is being his usual insufferable self. Varys has discovered that Danyerys Targaryen is alive....with three dragons in tow. The people in the North hate Theon Greyjoy with good reason. He hung the bodies of the two Stark children and displayed them in the front of the castle. They are dead....one would think. Maester Luwin is not convinced, after seeing a fleeting glimpse of Osha. Robb is conflicted, his mother has handed over the Kingslayer to Brienne. His supposed best friend, Theon, has betrayed him by raizing the castle of Winterfell. His sister is held hostage in Kings Landing and his brothers are captive while Theon is still at Winterfell. To top it off, he has to honour a betrothal contract with Walder Frey, marrying one of his youngest daughters, in order to keep peace and friendly relations with the Freys and Starks for political reasons. Easier said then done, especially when he is enamoured of Talisa Migear, who is a nurse and healer, helping out in his camp.

Arya names her final name to Jaqen and he is not pleased with her choice. Arya is a tough, scrappy little fighter who is coming into her own power. On condition that she un-names Jaqen, she wants her freedom to escape from Harrenhal. And as for Jon Snow, well, he is not in a position to do anything now. Ygritte has turned him over to the Lord of Bones and the Halfhand has been captured. They are off to meet the mysterious Mance Rayder. Next week is the EPIC episode - Blackwater Bay and the big guy himself, George R R, wrote this one himself.

I am TOTALLY looking forward to this one! Valar Morghulis!

Books vs Screenplay

Author: Anonymous / Labels: ,

Okay, we all know that it is almost near impossible to create the Game of Thrones series by staying 100% true to the books. I would say that the screenwriters have done an excellent job so far. They are at 90%, in terms of keeping true to the plot lines.

In various Game of Thrones feeds, there are fans who complain about how Season II is deviating from the actual book. Well, I am not a screenwriter but you have to give them credit where it is due. They have to take what they can from the books but also have a little bit of creative liberty, too. All in all, I am a pretty happy camper with the results.

The Women of Westeros

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , ,

For those that have read the books and have watched the series, perhaps you've noticed that there are several types of women portrayed: survivor, schemer, prostitute, victim, innocent child or ex-patriot.

Make no mistake: it's a man's world in Game of Thrones. Women are at the mercy of men: noble ladies are dependent on their husbands for safety, their lives endangered by war, the threat of being kidnapped or raped, and the chances of suffering death during childbirth are high. It's a grim, nasty world out there. Women have to do what needs to be done in order to get ahead. Sometimes, that means doing things that are considered "dirty" or "unsavoury."

Catelyn Stark: survivor. She's had five children with her late husband, Eddard Stark. She's the mother of a King (Robb); she's the lady of Winterfell and acts as a counsellor to her son, Robb. It's clear that she loves her children. However, because she's acted as parlay for her son - in speaking to the late King Renly - she has been absent from Winterfell and away from her two youngest sons, Bran and Rickon. She hails from Riverrun, and was part of the Tully clan, before she married Eddard. She had a loving marriage - but the only thorn in her side was Jon Snow, the child that Eddard allegedly fathered outside of their marriage. She lives by her Tully code: "Family, Duty, Honour."

Danyerys Targaryen: survivor and ex-patriot. Her debut in the world was uneventful. As a baby, she was spirited away from Dragonstone, along with her brother Visyers, in order to survive. She was pimped out by her brother and married off to Khal Drogo, a brutal and savage warlord of the Dorthraki tribe. However, her adaptation of their culture and language only endeared her to her husband and their people. Unfortunately, she had a stillborn child and was forced to smother her husband, when he was in a vegetative state. Alone, abandoned by the people, she had no choice but to wander the Red Waste until her tiny tribe came upon Qarth. She's had to be strong for her people, as a good leader must lead by example. She has three 'children' - her three dragons. Once they grow, she will be a force to reckon with.

Cersei Lannister Baratheon: schemer and prostitute. She is constantly plotting to overthrow anyone who gets in her way. Cersei does not trust anyone who isn't a Lannister. Her frustration and anger stems from the fact that she was born a twin, a female and that her role is lessened to that of a princess and she is defined by her gender. She has an unholy relationship with her twin brother and out of it she bore three children. Through incest, those children were produced. Her late husband, Robert Baratheon, did not know or suspect that his three children were not his. Cersei is ruthless and power hungry. She abuses her power. The worst thing this woman ever did was have an incestual relationship with her twin brother Jaime, put her son Joffrey on the throne and stand aside while Eddard Stark was being executed. She stops at nothing to get what she wants and that also includes sleeping with her cousin, Lancel and a few other bannermen to try and get her way. One person who sees through her is Tyrion, her younger brother. Tyrion doesn't accept her lies and calls her on it. She hates Tyrion, because he knows all of her depraved, disgusting secrets.

Myrcella Baratheon: innocent child. Myrcella has a sweet dispostion. It's almost hard to believe that her mother is that monster, Cersei Lannister. She is quiet, dutiful and lives at King's Landing with her mother, uncle and brothers. She is shipped off to Dorne, to solidify a marriage betrothal arranged by her uncle, Tyrion Lannister. Tyrion arranged the match because he was savvy enough to know that they would gain the support of the Martells of Dorne, a rich family, while at the same time, making sure his only niece was safe and out of the rotten environment that King's Landing has become.

Sansa Stark: victim and survivor. Unfortunately, Sansa is a young teenage girl with dreams of courtly love and life. She was raised to be very ignorant: she is trained in the finer arts of needlework and history lessons, court life and chatelaine training to be a dutiful daughter and wife. She used to have fanciful notions of court life - she would be married to Joffrey and have little princes and princesses. Once her father was murdered, se began to see what her life was like in King's Landing for what it really was: she was a hostage.  Before her father died, she caught glimpses of Joffrey's immature and spoiled nature. After Joffrey is placed on the throne, she is under constant threat and attack and has no choice but to acquiese to Joffrey's insufferable tantrums. She becomes numb with duty: she's almost robotic in her nature, declaring she still loves Joffrey and is loyal to him. Look deeper: she's surrounded by enemies (except Tyrion) and she has to do what needs to be done in order to live another day.

Arya Stark: survivor and schemer. Arya is feisty, spunky and fiery. She challenges the norms of her day and dislikes her finer lessons. She embraces her fencing and sword lessons with Syrio Forel. She is quick to size up a situation, especially around her father or brothers. She has a keen sense of intellect, for a girl so young. She is a teenager but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in attitude. Arya held her late father, Eddard Stark, in high esteem and yet, she understood that it was his honour that ended up getting him killed. She buries her fear and replaces it with a searing hot need for revenge. When her father was killed, she was smuggled out of King's Landing for safety from Yoren. On her way to the Wall, she disguised herself as a boy, knowing that it was safer to do so and that nobody would recognize her. With her fiery attitude and sword, Needle, she was quick to befriend Gendry (who just happens to be the late King Robert's illegitimate son and true heir). She begins to formulate a list of who she wants revenge on. She faced her death on many occasions and was able to prevent it. She ends up in Harrenhal, of all places, as Tywin Lannister's cupbearer. She has to be careful the way she comports herself around everyone. As sly as she is, Tywin sees through her act but she is smart enough never to reveal the simple fact that she is a Stark. They come to enjoy each other's company. Tywin likes this little girl with the steely grit in her eyes and she, in turn, likes the fact that he has many conversations - with her and his men - to which she can tuck that information and save it for a rainy day. Valar Morghulis!

Shae: prostitute and survivor. We don't know much about her history, but we know she is foreign. She becomes Tyrion's secret paramour and goes along with him to King's Landing, once Tyrion is proclaimed Hand of the King. She used to be a prostitute but becomes Sansa Stark's handmaiden. She does not trust anyone and advises Sansa to do the same thing, as it is better not to trust anyone, that way you're not disappointed or betrayed.

Roz: prostitute and survivor. The first time we meet Roz, she is with Tyrion. She is a simple country wench, a prostitute with a keen sense for sizing people up. Once she moves to King's Landing, she becomes elevated: she moves up to being the madam, helping out Littlefinger in one of his many brothels. Unfortunately for Roz, she may have 'moved up in the world' in one way, but has been witness to many brutal acts...issued by King Joffrey.

Brienne of Tarth: a new character in a Clash of Kings, Brienne is a knight and loyal subject. She is a survivor and in a sense, an ex-patriot. She witnessed the death of the late King Renly and was accused of his murder, even though she was in love with him and his most loyal subject. Due to her size and stature, she fights with great skill and strength. She is not comfortable being viewed as a genteel lady, but likes the idea of fighting for honour. She becomes Catelyn Stark's personal knight.

Margaery Tyrell: a high born lady that we are introduced to in a Clash of Kings, Margaery is married to King Renly for political reasons. She is a survivor and a schemer. Margaery is highly skilled and tutored for court life. She is beautiful but beyond her looks, she has a shrewd intelligence that will be sharply honed. She is highly influenced by her grandmother. She will become more of a power player in this season and in A Storm of Swords.

Osha: survivor. Osha was taken captive and placed under guard at Winterfell. She ends up helping Bran and Hodor and befriends the both of them. She tricks Theon Greyjoy and seduces him, leaving him in the night, in order to flee under the cover of darkness. She helps Bran and Rickon escape with Hodor and the boys' direwolves.

Ygritte: a wildling and free woman, she is truly a survivor, for she's lived beyond the wall. Fiery in temprament, she's skilled in fighting. She also happens to catch the eye of Jon Snow. She certainly appreciates what she sees in him. And of course, we know he has taken a vow of chastity in order to become a Man of the Night's Watch. The sparks between the two of them are evident. A tale as old as time, it's like watching Adam and Eve. In a word: temptation!

A Man Without Honour

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , ,

After watching (and rewatching) last night's episode....you had to wonder, who in Westeros truly has honour?

I believe that Ned Stark did, as did Bariston Selmy. I believe that the old bear, Lord Commander Mormont does and Jon Snow possesses it, too. King Robb Stark is also a man with honour, as in evidence by the way he talks to his troops, the way he cares for them and how he listens to his bannermen's counsel. (He really should've listened to his mother's, regarding the Greyjoy's).

I was sad to see Ser Rodrick Cassel die. That upset me. However, it creates the sort of dramatic tension in order to keep the audience riveted to the screen and also instill a fierce loyalty to the remaining Stark crew. Brandon has forced to become a man in such a short span of time, even though he is only a teen.

And Tyrion has his own sense of honour, given who his brother, sister and father are. He truly cares for his niece Myrcella and nephew Tommen, but as for the rest of them, he knows they don't truly respect him because of his "imp" status. And Ayra....how amazing are her scenes with the great Tywin? Even though they are on duelling paths and he (apparently) has no knowledge that she is a Stark, you have to love their banter back and forth. He likes that fact that she is quick to sum up a situation. She likes that she can have a conversation, it is her way of being savvy at gathering information for future use. Also love how Tywin sees through what she says but he enjoys her company.

"You're a sharp little thing, aren't you?"

Rolling Stone Magazine

I went to three Chapters/Indigo stores who did NOT have the brand new RS issue in stock.

Needless to say, that did not make me a happy camper. I was told to come back on Monday, May 14.

You don't need to remind me twice, either!

Peter Dinklage on Rolling Stone Mag!

Author: Anonymous / Labels: ,

I have to admit....I have a serious crush on Peter Dinklage. I find out tonight that he's going to be gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. The issue comes out this Friday. Which means I'm going to purchase several copies and put one away in my Game of Thrones time capsule.

Tyrion, get medieval on someone!!!!!!!!

Survival

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , , ,

The episode "The Old Gods and the New" had a distinct theme throughout: what one must do in order to survive in the world of Westeros. Robb - wants to head back north to Winterfell to avenge Ser Rodrick's death and take care of Theon Greyjoy.

Brandon - desires to save the people of Winterfell but not wanting any harm coming to them.

Theon - still trying to prove what a man he is to everyone around him - often - with fatal results.

Osha - doing what it takes to survive in order to escape.

Arya - trying to be as stealthy as she can in order to gain inside information while using magic to get rid of her enemies.

Sansa - who comes to the realization that the world is not all fairy tales and perfect romances.

Tyrion - who is desperately trying to prevent open war and rebellion while at the same time trying to outmanouevre his cunning sister, Cersei AND trying very hard not to beat the living tar out of his stupid nephew, Joffrey.

Daneyers - trying to claim back the Iron Throne from a world away, with no ships, no armies and worst of all - no dragons (they've been abducted).

A Feast for Crows

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , ,

Officially started reading "A Feast for Crows." This is - for those of you who don't know - the fourth book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, written by George R. R. Martin. So far, it was a little slow for me, I think because I'm still watching the second season and don't want to get too far ahead of myself. Then again, I really do enjoy reading about new characters and seeing how the story line is developing. I'll think I'll just stay the course.

HBO on Demand

Sometimes, a funny thing happens when I wake up on a Sunday morning. I go downstairs to check out the previous weeks' Game of Thrones episode and guess what?! I see the next one listed. And it's not even 9:00 p.m. yet! That's what I call a victory!!

"Seven Devils"

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , ,

For everyone who started watching all of the Game of Thrones trailers, I have to say that the best one they came out with was the one titled, "Seven Devils." Why? Because the trailer captures the corruption, the desolation of some of the locations, the isolation some of the characters feel, the peril some of them face firsthand and the sheer determination of the characters. The music in the trailer is from a group called Florence and the Machine. The good folks at HBO could not have picked a more perfect piece of music to reflect the mood for the second season. Thanks to the trailer, Florence and the Machine's "Seven Devils" track on YouTube has picked up a lot more visitors! You go, Flo!

A New Generation of GoT Fans

Author: Anonymous / Labels: , , , , , , , , , , ,

It just occurred to me: George R. R. Martin wrote the first three books of "A Song of Fire and Ice" in the late 1990's and early 2000s. Which means that when book number four and five came out, people began to flock to those ones just as quick! Of course, with HBO creating and producing the hit series "Game of Thrones" in April 2011 and 2012, the audience for his literary works has now doubled, or perhaps tripled. I am a fan, no doubt.

Soon, there will be a new member in my family, a nephew (who is due anyday now) and you know what that means, don't you? I'm going to have to purchase his first Game of Thrones t-shirt, lunchbox, bottle, etc. When I was little, both my older brothers and I were major "Star Wars" fans. We had the bedsheets, the toys, the lego and the lunchboxes. Three cheers for "Star Wars" & "Game of Thrones!" May the fans carry on all the funny and silly traditions that go along with popular films and book series!
